What I learned from living overseas

Gabriela Damaceno

1. Adaptation

Living overseas isn’t an easy thing to do. We leave our family and friends to build a new life in another country. Many things are different from what we’re used to – the food, culture,  sense of humour, and much more. But, after 10 months of living in Australia, I realised that we have a fantastic ability to adapt ourselves to many different situations.

2. Simple things have a tremendous meaning

When I was living in Brazil, I used to do a lot of ordinary things like go to the supermarket and drink a beer on the way back or go to a bakery shop to buy pão de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread) before going to the beach. I took it for granted in my home country, but now I miss it so much.

3. Not giving up

Building a new life in a place where you don’t have the same norms, point of view, and local perspective is a challenging situation. Daily, we receive a lot of NOs, and we can’t change that. But what we can do is not give up. Since I moved to Australia, I decided to take every ‘no’ as a motivation to keep following my dreams.

The most challenging aspect of living overseas is getting out of the comfort zone. We deal daily with homesickness, negative stereotypes and cultural clashes, but that makes us stronger! Imagine how boring the world would be if all the countries were the same?

I would love to hear from you what you’ve learned living overseas. Share your thoughts in the comment box below!
